Free Mind

Context

A Personal Project Beyond Competition

Originally created for a video contest centered around the theme “Freedom”, this project took on a different meaning when the competition was eventually cancelled.

Despite that, I chose to complete the film, not for submission, but for the vision behind it.

The goal was simple: create a cinematic piece that captures both the intensity of downhill mountain biking and the serenity of the natural environment surrounding it.

Concept

Freedom Through Landscape

Rather than focusing purely on performance, I wanted the video to breathe.

Freedom, for me, was not just speed or adrenaline. It was space. Silence. Elevation.

Berre-les-Alpes offered the perfect terrain, wide natural views, textured landscapes, and a strong sense of isolation. The location became as important as the rider.

Visual Direction

Contemplative & Cinematic

The visual approach was intentionally slow and immersive.

  • Slow-motion riding sequences

  • Drone shots emphasizing scale and elevation

  • Static landscape frames without the bike

  • Natural light, soft grading

Some shots focus purely on nature, no rider, no movement, allowing the audience to connect with the environment before returning to the action.

The rhythm of the edit was designed to contrast intensity with stillness.

Sound & Atmosphere

Music as Emotional Anchor

The track “Autre Temps” by Alcest played a central role in shaping the film’s pacing and emotional tone.

Its ambient and atmospheric structure reinforced the contemplative mood of the project. Instead of cutting aggressively to action beats, the edit follows the music’s flow, letting images unfold naturally.

The result is less a sports highlight, and more a sensory experience.

Outcome

A Study of Movement & Space

“Free Mind” is not just a biking session, it’s a visual exploration of solitude, motion, and connection to nature.

Although the contest was cancelled, the project became a personal milestone. It reflects my approach to filmmaking: balancing performance and emotion, action and stillness, energy and contemplation.
